With ChatGPT, OpenAI has revolutionized the topic of artificial intelligence. Now the company presented a new AI model: OpenAI o1. This is a series of programs that are primarily intended to solve complex problems, according to the developers official blog post.
The model needs more time to react. However, it should be able to think through complex tasks in the areas of science, programming and mathematics – in the truest sense of the word.
What is OpenAI o1?
OpenAI o1 is an advanced AI system built on the GPT models. However, the system’s capabilities should go far beyond that. While previous versions of ChatGPT primarily specialize in text input and its processing, OpenAI 01 combines various capabilities and functions to handle more complex interactions and tasks.
OpenAI trained the model to approach problems more closely to that of humans. Through the training you will learn to refine a thought process, try out different strategies and recognize your own mistakes. These skills are based on the so-called Chain of Thought Process. Tests have already shown that the concept seems to be working.
The AI model had to solve demanding benchmark tasks in the areas of physics, chemistry and biology. According to the company, the performance corresponded to that of doctoral students: “In a qualification test for the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO), GPT-4o only solved 13 percent of the tasks correctly, while the mental model achieved 83 percent.”
In addition, the o1 series is multimodal – like GPT-4o. The system should be able to understand, process and react accordingly not only to texts, but also to images, audio files and videos. This also expands the possible uses at the user level.
New o1 series still in development
According to OpenAI, the extended reasoning capabilities of the o1 series will be particularly useful for researchers, physicists and developers.
However, it is still an early model. Because it doesn’t yet have many of the features that make ChatGPT so successful. For example, the o1 series cannot search the Internet. So far no images and files can be uploaded.
However, the development of OpenAI o1 represents a significant advance in solving complex mental tasks and thus a new level, according to the company. “For this reason, we reset the counter to one and call this series OpenAI o1.”
OpenAI plans regular updates and improvements. The next update is said to be already in development. Currently only ChatGPT Plus and Team users have access to the OpenAI o1 preview. However, there will soon be access to the “mini” version for all users. However, a fixed date has not yet been set.
