Since the beginning of 2025, consumers in Germany have been entitled to an intelligent electricity meter. We’ll tell you what you need to consider when applying for a so-called smart meter.
If you want to benefit from a dynamic electricity tariff, you need the appropriate hardware in your household. This primarily includes the so-called smart meter, i.e. an intelligent electricity meter.
This is the only way electricity consumption can be billed precisely. Since January 1, 2025, consumers in Germany have even been entitled to the new measuring instruments.
Apply for smart meters
If you are interested in installing a smart meter in your home, you can apply for this from your measuring point operator. In the future, consumption points will be entitled to networked electricity meters.
If you submit an application, your local electricity grid operator has four months to install it for you. However, the prerequisite is that the technical conditions for this are met.
According to the Measuring Point Operation Act, a fee of 30 euros is charged for installation. This should actually be increased to 100 euros before Christmas by adjusting the law. The Draft law with the changes However, it was no longer passed in the Bundestag.

These households automatically receive a new electricity meter
Since January 1, 2025, not only the right to smart meters applies. Another innovation also applies to households that use more than 6,000 kilowatt hours per year.
The network operators are required to roll out these large consumers. This also applies to consumers who operate a solar system with at least seven kilowatts of installed power.
However, the rollout of smart meters for these households could take some time. Because by the end of 2025, only 20 percent of them will have to be equipped with a smart meter.
Smart meter for dynamic electricity tariffs
The right to smart meters is essential, especially for providers of dynamic electricity tariffs. That’s why the providers Octopus Energy, Tibber, RABOT and Ostrom, among others, have joined forces to form the smart meter initiative.
“Smart meters play a crucial role in the energy transition,” is what the initiative says. “In combination with a dynamic electricity tariff, electricity can be consumed exactly when it is particularly cheap and therefore usually particularly green.”
However, the initiative estimates that only two percent of households in Germany are currently equipped with an intelligent electricity meter.
