How clean are the cars on Germany’s roads? The ADAC examined this in its Ecotest. The result: It’s not just pure electric cars that are convincing. In our weekly ranking we show you the ten cleanest cars of the year.
The EU goals are clear: from 2035, new cars with combustion engines will only be allowed to be registered if they are CO2-emission-free during operation. This would mean the end for petrol and diesel engines. So-called e-fuels are an exception.
When buying a car, many people think about an electric vehicle. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, around 380,000 electric cars were registered in 2024. But are they really more climate-friendly?
The cleanest cars of the year
The ADAC investigates in its Ecotest every year how clean the models currently available on the market are. For the automobile club, two factors are crucial: the toxins that leave the exhaust and the CO2 emissions.
The fewer of both released, the more points a vehicle can collect. There are a maximum of 50 points in the pollutants category, and up to 60 points for CO2 emissions. The ADAC does not view electric cars as zero-emissions cars, but rather takes into account the CO₂ and pollutant levels that arise during electricity generation. In the following ranking we show you the ten cleanest cars from 2024.
10th place: Toyota Prius 2.0 Plug-In Hybrid
Tenth place in the ranking of the cleanest cars of the year goes to the Toyota Prius 2.0 Plug-In Hybrid. The ADAC awarded overall 95 points. The CO2 emissions of the hybrid vehicle in the Ecotest were 104 grams per kilometer.

While it is positive to see that there are cars in Germany that are being touted as the “cleanest,” it is important to remember that all vehicles, regardless of how clean they are, still contribute to CO2 emissions.
In order to truly make a significant impact on reducing CO2 emissions, the industry needs to continue to innovate and develop more sustainable technologies, such as electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cells. Additionally, efforts should be made to improve infrastructure to support the widespread adoption of these cleaner technologies.
Ultimately, while it is commendable that there are cleaner cars available in Germany, it is essential that the industry continues to push the boundaries of innovation in order to combat the pressing issue of CO2 emissions on a global scale.
