The so-called Google Maps timeline is a personal map based on your location history. You can use it to see which places you have already visited and which routes you have taken. We’ll tell you how you can activate location history.
Google Maps: Activate or deactivate location history – here’s how
To create a timeline, you must enable location services and location history on Google Maps. You can then see the places you visited and the routes you traveled on a personal map. If you activate location history, your location will be regularly saved on your devices and Google servers – even if you don’t use Google apps in the meantime.
Google Maps creates a timeline for you based on this data. To enable location history on Android, you need to do the following:
- Open the Google Maps app on your Android smartphone or tablet.
- Then tap your profile picture and then tap “My timeline“.
- Now click on the three-dot menu and on “Settings and privacy“.
- Under “Location settings“ you can now either “Location tracking is activated” or “Location history is disabledClick on “.
If you want to turn on Google Maps location history on your iPhone or iPad, first go to Timeline on. Then click on “Settings“ and then click “Enable location history” or “Disable location history“.
View timeline
After you have activated your location history in Google Maps, you can track the places you have visited and the routes you have traveled. To do this, click on your profile picture in the app and then click on “My Timeline”. Or call up the timeline directly.
According to Google There may occasionally be errors in the timeline. If you are in a densely built-up urban area, it may happen that a different restaurant than the one you actually visited is displayed. To improve the accuracy of the timeline, you can also confirm and enter visited locations manually.
