iOS 17.6: New iPhone update closes security gaps

iOS 17.6 does not contain any new functions, but some features have been slightly adjusted. For example, if you receive an invitation to a family profile, you now have the option to accept or decline it.

iOS 17.6 is primarily intended to close several security gaps. Because according to Apple Several small and large errors have crept into the kernel of the WebKit browser engine, among other things. In some cases, attackers were able to access sensitive data such as contacts via the lock screen.

Due to an authentication issue, it was also possible for third parties to view albums with hidden images via the Photos app. Apple says it has solved this problem with improved status management with iOS 17.6. In a similar vein, the iPhone company fixed a bug that allowed access to private browser tabs.

When is iOS 18 coming?

iOS 18 is expected to be released in September. Developers have been able to test a first preliminary version since June 11, 2024. The official and public beta version followed in July 2024. According to Apple, the update will run on all devices that support iOS 17. Specifically, this means: on all devices built in 2018 – from the iPhone XS and XR.

The iPad update iPadOS 18 will also be released at the same time as iOS 18. Both versions should also include, among other things, the AI ​​system Apple Intelligence. According to Apple, it should be able to generate texts and images and post-process photos. The Apple Intelligence functions will be made available for the first time with iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 and will be gradually expanded.

Install iOS 17.6

iOS 17.6 has been available for free download since July 30, 2024. Apple traditionally recommends prompt installation. The iPhone update is available for all models starting with the iPhone XS. The version can be changed via the device settings under “Generally” and “Software update“ can be downloaded.

With iPadOS 17.6, Apple also has one new update presented for the iPad. The new software is available for all devices starting with the second-generation iPad Pro (12.9-inch), the third-generation iPad Pro (10.5-inch), the first-generation iPad Pro (11-inch) and the third-generation iPad Air generation available. This also applies to the normal sixth generation iPad and the fifth generation iPad Mini.
