Apple introduced iOS 18 in mid-September 2024. Since the update, you can also activate and send RCS messages on the iPhone. We’ll explain how it works.
The good old SMS has lost its importance in recent years. Their wedding took place in Germany in 2012 around 59.8 billion SMS sent.
WhatsApp, Telegram and Co. have now almost replaced SMS. Because in 2023 the number of SMS sent was only a meager 5.3 billion.
But with an innovation in iOS, SMS – or its successor – could experience an upswing again. In the future you will be able to activate RCS messages on your iPhone, which has been the case on Android for years.
Activate RCS messages on the iPhone – this is how it works
RCS stands for the “Rich Communication Services” protocol and describes the communication standard that is the successor to SMS. The standard was presented in Germany back in 2012.
But while RCS messages have long been integrated into Android, Apple has closed its doors to them in recent years. However, with the upgrade to iOS 18, this is now a thing of the past.
Because once you have updated your iPhone to the latest operating system, you can Activate RCS messages in the future. However, these have not yet been encrypted.
Here’s how you can set up the default
If you still want to activate RCS messages on your iPhone, you can easily do this in the settings. To do this, open the “Settings“ of your iPhone the menu “Apps“.
Now look for the sub-item “News“ in your overview and open the menu item. In the future you will also find the point “RCS News“. You can activate this using a slider.
If you use RCS messages in your Messages app on iPhone, they will have a different color than iMessage messages. While iMessage messages continue to appear in blue, RCS messages are green, like SMS before.
What can RCS messages do compared to SMS?
Compared to SMS, RCS messages offer significantly more options. Because you can not only receive short text messages, but also audios, images and videos.
There are also functions such as read receipts, emoji reactions and an icon when the contact partner types. Group chats are also possible via the Rich Communication Services protocol.
But in addition to the lack of end-to-end encryption, there are other problems with RCS messages. Because not all smartphone users have access to the SMS successor.
While Samsung has implemented RCS messages on its smartphones for years, this does not apply to all Android devices. There may also be problems with the network operator, because they also have to support the protocol.

As a Tech Industry expert, I believe that the activation of RCS messages on iPhone is a significant development for Apple users. RCS (Rich Communication Services) allows for more advanced messaging features such as read receipts, group chats, and high-quality media sharing. By enabling RCS on iPhone, users can have a more seamless and interactive messaging experience with their contacts. This feature brings Apple’s messaging capabilities closer to those of other messaging apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Overall, the activation of RCS messages on iPhone is a positive step towards enhancing the communication experience for Apple users.
