Google’s AI search results have declined significantly in recent months. This is the result of a current one study the SEO platform SE Ranking. Accordingly, the US company would reconsider the use of artificial intelligence in its search.

Background: In May 2024, Google integrated the AI Overview function into its search engine. An AI summarizes answers to search queries and displays them at the top of the search. However, questionable and even nonsensical content often appeared there.

Google is scaling back AI search results

SE Ranking researchers examined how frequently AI-generated content appears in search results and which sources were cited there. A test in July 2024 showed that of around 100,000 search queries, 7.47 percent contained the AI overview. This would correspond to a decrease of 1.24 percent compared to the previous month of June.

The researchers also concluded that the length of AI Overview’s content decreased to 2,633 characters. Compared to the previous month, that would be a decrease of 40 percent. The sources are again Forbes, Business Insider and Entrepreneur appeared most frequently.

AI Overview provides incorrect and misleading answers

Google had already announced at the end of May 2024 that it wanted to reduce its AI search results. There were previously numerous complaints because many users received incorrect or strange answers to their queries. AI Overview suggested using glue as a pizza ingredient to keep the cheese from slipping.

SE Rankings also found that Reddit or Quora links were no longer cited in Google’s AI search results as of July 11, 2024. The company had previously strongly favored the two platforms in its search.

As a Tech Industry expert, I find the revelation that Google is throttling its AI search results to be concerning. This raises questions about the transparency and fairness of the search engine’s algorithms, which are supposed to provide unbiased and relevant information to users.

If Google is indeed manipulating its AI search results, it could have far-reaching implications for online information access and potentially harm competition in the search engine market. It is important for tech companies to be transparent about how their algorithms work and ensure that they are not unfairly favoring certain websites or content.

This study highlights the need for increased scrutiny and regulation of tech companies to ensure that they are not abusing their power to control the flow of information online. It also underscores the importance of diversifying search options and promoting competition in the search engine industry to prevent any one company from having too much control over what information users can access.
