Automatic subtitles have been common on YouTube for a long time. In September 2024, the company officially announced that it would also introduce an automatic video translation function. It creates translated audio tracks in different languages so that viewers around the world have better access to content.
Videos with these audio tracks are marked “Auto-synced” in the video description. If they are available in multiple languages, users have the option to switch between the different audio tracks.
Here’s how to change the language of audio tracks on YouTube
By default, videos play in the language you set for YouTube. In the settings you can now choose between change available translations. To change the audio track, first access the video you want to watch.
In the video player, select “Settings“ by clicking on the gear icon. Then click on “Audio“. There you will now see all available audio tracks and can select the desired language.
How to change the language in the YouTube app
If you’re using YouTube on a mobile device, you can also change the audio track via the app. There you first select a corresponding video. Then tap on “ in the video playerSettings“. Above “Additional settings” you get to the tab “Audio“. There you can select the audio track you want.
If there are translations of the title and description for the video, you can also use these as search terms. Videos in search results and recommendations are played by default with the audio track in your set language.
